ii PCX2PCL User's Manual PCX2PCL v1.3
Chapter One
─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
Introduction
PCX2PCL is a utility used to convert ZSoft PCX format files to Hewlett-
Packard PCL (Printer Command Language) format. PCX2PCL successfully
converts images created with PC Paintbrush, Corel Draw, Scanning Gallery
(with Hewlett-Packard's ScanJet scanner) and other software that can
save images in PCX format. Converted files can be downloaded to and
printed on HP LaserJet Plus, Series II, III and 100% compatible laser
printers as graphic macros.
Until August 26, 1991, a companion utility, TIF2PCL, was included in the
package. It has been omitted due to the dynamic nature of the TIFF
"standard." So, wherever you see the name PCX2PCL/TIF2PCL - it is
really now just PCX2PCL.
New with PCX2PCL version 1.1 are options to rotate images to landscape
orientation (rotates images 90 degrees counter-clockwise), and to create
negatives (reverses the black and white).
New with PCX2PCL version 1.2 is the option to increase the size of the
PCL image by a factor of 2, 3, or 4. If you specify /X2, for example,
the PCL image created will be 2 times taller and 2 times wider than the
original. Its resolution will also be cut in half.
PCX2PCL version 1.3 corrects a very minor problem that would occur if
the destination you specified for the converted PCL file was a different
drive than where the PCX file was. The result was that only the
portrait version of the graphic would be converted, and the message "Not
Completed" would be displayed. This only occurred when using the /L or
/N option. Also, PCX2PCL v1.3 is the first version released as ASP
shareware.
─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
Registered and Shareware Version Differences
PCX2PCL is distributed as both a shareware product and as a retail
product. The shareware version and the retail version are identical,
except that the shareware version displays reminders to order a
registered copy of PCX2PCL, and it allows you to print the Order Form.
If you are using the retail version, purchased from TaxWare, Thank You.
If you are using the shareware version, we hope you find it to be useful.
This manual is used with both the shareware and registered versions of
PCX2PCL. If you are using the shareware version, refer to the following
documents for additional information: SHAREW.DOC, REGISTER.DOC, ORDER.FRM.
─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
PCX2PCL System Requirements
PCX2PCL requires the following:
o A personal computer (PC) running DOS version 2.1 or higher and having
at least 40K of free RAM
PCX2PCL User's Manual 1 PCX2PCL v1.3
o An HP LaserJet or 100% compatible printer
─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
PCX2PCL Installation
Installing PCX2PCL is very simple:
o Create a subdirectory for PCX2PCL
o Copy the files from the PCX2PCL distribution diskette to the new
subdirectory
For example,
Create a subdirectory called PCX2PCL and change directory to it:
C:> MD PCX2PCL
C:> CD PCX2PCL
Next, place the PCX2PCL distribution diskette in the floppy drive and copy
all its files to the newly created subdirectory:
C:> COPY A:*.*

─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
PCX2PCL Help
Type PCX2PCL at the DOS prompt to receive Usage help. A screen similar
to the following will appear:
Z:PCX2P Version 1.3 (reg'd to ?????)
(C) Copyright TaxWare 1989, 1990. All Rights Reserved.
Z:PCX2P - PCX To PCL File Conversion Utility
Usage: Z:PCX2P [options] PCXFile[.PCX] [PCLFile[.PCL]]
The following options are available:
/L rotate to landscape orientation.
/N create negative of the original.
/Xn increase image n times (n = 2, 3, or 4).
PCXFile is the file name of a PCX format file to be converted.
PCLFile (optional) is the file name of the PCL file created.
─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
PCX2PCL Examples
The following example converts the file SIGNATUR.PCX (PCX format) to the
file SIGNATUR.PCL (PCL format).
>PCX2PCL SIGNATUR.PCX SIGNATUR.PCL
The following commands do the same as the above example:
>PCX2PCL SIGNATUR.PCX
>PCX2PCL SIGNATUR
The following example converts the file MYLOGO.PCX (PCX format) to the file
MYLOGO.PCL (PCL format).
>PCX2PCL MYLOGO.PCX MYLOGO.PCL
The following commands do the same as the above example:
>PCX2PCL MYLOGO.PCX
>PCX2PCL MYLOGO
─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
PCX2PCL Macro Usage
The converted PCL files can now be used as graphic macros. In order to
use graphic macros, they must be sent (downloaded) to your printer's
memory. This can be accomplished by using the DOWNLOAD utility included
with the package (see accompanying instructions). Once DOWNLOADed to the
printer's memory, you must access a macro from within your word
PCX2PCL User's Manual 3 PCX2PCL v1.3
processor or other application by inserting special printer commands
called escape sequences. The method for inserting the escape sequences
and for accessing a macro will differ, depending upon your application,
and it is possible that more than one method will work.
For best results, follow the steps outlined below:
1 Create a PCX file with a scanner or paint or draw program.
2 Convert the PCX file to PCL format.
3 Download the converted file as a macro using the DOWNLOAD utility
4 Follow the instructions below for your particular application.
5 Unload the macro from the printer's memory with the UNLOAD utility.
Example Macro Usage
For this example we will assume that you wish to have your signature printed
at end of a letter. We will also assume that your current directory is
where your Scanning Gallery software resides (call it C:\SCAN), and the
PCX2PCL program disk is in your A: drive.
1 Sign your name on white paper using a dark ink. Scan the signature
and save it as SIGNATUR.PCX. (Remember to select only the area of
the paper that contains your signature - see Scanning Gallery
User's Guide pg 40.)
2 Convert the image from PCX to PCL format. This example creates the
PCL file SIGNATUR.PCL.
C>A:PCX2PCL SIGNATUR.PCX (You will see a message indicating
that the conversion is taking
place.)
3 Download the converted file. This example downloads the macro with
an ID of 1 to printer LPT1, the default printer.
C>A:DOWNLOAD SIGNATUR.PCL /M1 (You will see a message
indicating that the macro is
being downloaded.)
4 Follow the instructions below for accessing the macro with your
particular application.
5 Unload the macro from the printer's memory. Because the macro was
DOWNLOADed with an ID of 1, it must be UNLOADed using the same ID.
C>A:UNLOAD /M1 (You will see a message stating that the macro
is unloaded.)
